ATHLETICS’ DIARY: THE RETURN OF A YOUNG KENYAN TO THE HIGHLANDS

I left Kenya at the age of ten with sweet memories of the malls, chips, sausages and water slides. After a five year stay in Atlanta, Georgia, watching American television, the preconception of Kenya as a wasteland ravished with diseases and roaming animals had taken root in my mind. I looked forward to my return with a pinch of anxiety, nostalgic excitement, and yet expecting nothing.

From the time we landed at the Jomo Kenyatta Airport, my anxieties quickly faded in the face of familiarity, Kenya is a country I could never forget. From the beautiful hills to the towns, each with their own personalities the country's landscape had remained embedded in my mind.

The roads seemed eerily familiar in- Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, which now matches any major city in the United States of America. Speak of the most beautiful hotels, shops, and beautiful people. Even though I had neither seen my family nor my friends in Kenya in five years, we hit it off as soon as we met. It was as if I had never left Kenya, after five years in America, I did not feel any disconnection from those who loved me. That is the Kenyan hospitality.

I recently joined my high school track team and one of the main reasons to visit Kenya was highland training. After some endless parties in Nairobi, I headed to Nyeri to a small village called Kiambogo in Gatarakwa location, at the foothills of the Aberdare Mountains, where my grandmother's home is located. The village lies approximately 10,000 feet above see level, with no industries, highways or any one of those things that contribute to air pollution.

My running regime started at 6.00am, with breakfast and stretches. I had been here before when I was younger but this time it was a brand new experience. This place felt so serene, so placid; a completely brand new experience. The air was so clean running here was the greatest pleasure to my lungs. The temperatures were cool, sometimes even cold. The hills extremely steep, but that's just part of training. The night sky was phenomenal as the area is not connected to any electrical grid. Pitch dark, and in the cloudless nights, the sky felt like a dreamy ceiling towering over my head. I had never been so near the millions sparkling stars.

I made time to visit the forests near the Aberdare Ranges where there are beautiful waterfalls and remnants of Mau Mau caves. It was an enchanting place, sighting antelopes, monkeys, gazelles, but nothing prepared my encounter with stinging nettles. I had to learn quickly how bad the plants can sting. Tracking up the hills I witnessed the most beautiful view staring down the savannas below and into the very eyes of the snow capped Mt. Kenya in the eastern horizon.

Time went fast and after 3 weeks training I headed back to Nairobi. I joined a small band of Kenya athletes training at the Ngong Hills, outside Nairobi. Ngong Hills offers a challenging terrain for training, but it is a Nairobi city suburb that comes with more interruption from traffic, people and less natural habitats. I trained on the Ngong Hills- for a only week and a half. But in those few days I had a new perspective on racing and training in Kenya. On the last day we traveled to Nyayo Stadium, a track and field stadium in downtown Nairobi. There, one of my dreams came true when I met some of the Kenya's Olympic team including Catherine Ndereba, I watched them train and even got the chance to speak with a few of them. This experience came full circle when I returned to Atlanta and watched as Ms Ndereba won the Silver Medal in the women’s marathon and Mr Wanjiru the Gold Medal in the men’s marathon. Suddenly their glory felt real to me, and no images on TV will ever alter what Kenya has to offer to those who want to pursue their dreams in athletics.

Leadership. The Pharmaceutical Industry in Kenya

The pharmaceutical industry in Kenya is growing and within the next 20 years we expect that the
research and development of drugs, devices and vaccines needed for Kenya and the other East
African countries (Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania) will be done in East Africa. We are working
towards this goal in the Ustawi companies (which publish MJoTA).

On 29 Aug 2008 Ustawi principal in Nairobi, Theuri Mwai (immediately below) and I (in green) visited

the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Nairobi as guests of Professor Anastasia Guantai (pictured
below in blue), who is Professor of Pharmacy and past Dean of the Faculty. Mr Mwai is working with
the faculty in Nairobi to realize their vision for Kenya; he took these pictures during our visit.
